Close call in playoff caps strong county showing at the Clwyd

It was a weekend to remember for our county players in the Clwyd Championship, with three county representatives finishing in the top five and a dramatic playoff deciding the title.

Played over 72 holes with two rounds at the Vale of Llangollen Golf Club on Saturday, followed by a further two rounds at Wrexham Golf Club on Sunday. After four rounds of highly competitive golf, County Captain Matt Peacock and fellow county player Iwan Lewis set the early clubhouse target, both finishing on +9 for the championship after posting impressive and consistent performances over the weekend.

Their score proved difficult to catch, eventually leading to a three-man playoff alongside eventual champion Lewis Harrison. In a dramatic conclusion to the championship, Harrison birdied the opening playoff hole to secure the title.

There was further success for the county side, with Peacock also claiming the Egerton Vase for the best 36-hole aggregate at Wrexham Golf Club, thanks to an excellent score of 143.

Adding to an impressive county showing, County Vice Captain Lee Jones secured an excellent fifth-place finish overall, underlining the strength and depth currently within the county setup.

The county would like to extend sincere thanks to both Vale of Llangollen Golf Club and Wrexham Golf Club for hosting this year’s championship. Both courses were presented in outstanding condition throughout the weekend and provided a superb test for all competitors.

It was an encouraging weekend for county golf, with strong performances across the field and plenty of positives to take forward into the remainder of the season.
