Caernarfonshire secured a hard-fought 5–4 victory over Denbighshire in their second county match of the season at Llangollen Golf Club on Sunday, with the result once again coming down to the finest of margins.
Played on a course presented in outstanding condition, both teams were tested by swirling winds throughout the day, making club selection particularly challenging and adding another layer of difficulty to an already competitive fixture.
Caernarfonshire made a strong start in the morning foursomes, taking a 2–1 lead into lunch after a series of solid performances and giving themselves a narrow advantage heading into the afternoon singles.
The singles proved just as closely contested, with both teams sharing the session 3–3. That left Caernarfonshire edging the overall match 5–4 and securing an important win in their second outing of the season.
As with the opening match against Flintshire, this contest was decided by fine margins, with several matches going deep into the closing holes.
One of the pivotal moments of the day came in the closing stages of the morning foursomes. Standing on the final green with the match finely balanced, Lee Jones produced a superb 15-foot putt on the last hole to turn what looked set to be a half into a crucial full point for Caernarfonshire.
There were several standout performances across the team. Special mention goes to Julian Williams, who stepped in at short notice and delivered an important point for the county when it mattered most.
Nick Lofthouse also deserves significant praise. In his second spell as a county player, he produced an excellent display to win both of his matches and make a major contribution to the team’s success.
The county would like to thank Nick Dulson, Vale of Llangollen Golf Club, and Denbighshire for their hospitality and for helping make the day such a competitive and enjoyable fixture.
Attention now turns to the third county match of the season in two weeks’ time, where Caernarfonshire will face Anglesey as they look to build on this encouraging start.
