Caernarfonshire brought their county season to a close at the Welsh Intercounties at Newport Golf Club on 26th and 27th of September, finishing fifth overall after two days of competition against the other counties of Wales.
The team made a solid start in the opening betterball competition, finishing the day in fourth place at ten under par. Paul Roberts and Shaun Harpin led the way with an excellent six under par, while Matt Peacock and Lee Jones contributed a strong four under par. Nick Lofthouse and Julian Williams also produced a solid three under par, although this score did not count towards the team total.
Despite the strong start, Caernarfonshire found themselves seven shots behind the leaders following two outstanding 11-under-par rounds from pairings representing other counties. It left the team with work to do heading into the singles.
Unfortunately, the singles got off to a difficult start with Paul Roberts’ early withdrawal. With the competition based on the best five scores from six players, this meant the remaining five players’ scores all had to count towards the final total.
The team battled hard through some challenging conditions, but ultimately finished fifth, 37 shots behind eventual winners Glamorgan. Nick Lofthouse was Caernarfonshire’s leading scorer in the singles, returning a respectable 75.
While the final result was disappointing, the Intercounties provided a fitting conclusion to another successful season for Caernarfonshire. The squad has shown its quality throughout the year, securing the overall league title and winning the Four Counties Championship.
A huge thank you goes to all six players for their commitment, hard work and dedication in representing the county throughout the season. Their efforts, along with the support of everyone involved, are greatly appreciated. A special thanks to our county president, Eilir Angel, for driving the minibus to South Wales and for his support throughout 2026.
We know there is still a gap to close against the leading southern counties, but the squad has plenty to build on. We will take the lessons from Newport, continue to work hard and look to challenge again in 2027.
Thank you to everyone who has represented and supported Caernarfonshire this season. We look forward to coming back stronger next year!
